When can I start snowboarding?

Hi there,
When will it start snowing in either the Japanese Alps or Hokkaido? And when will the resorts open so that I can start snowboarding?! And whilst I'm writing, is it easy to do day trips from Tokyo to somewhere in the Alps to go boarding?
