7 day JR pass or 14 day

Greetings,
I thought I'd start posting some of my travel questions here.
First one is,
I'm going with a friend to Japan for 18 days during Christmas break (arrive Dec. 19th leave Jan. 5th).
I have a friend who lives an hour out of Tokyo who I plan to stay with for a week and just visit Tokyo. After that, my traveling companion and I will use the JR pass to visit varies cities.
Should I plan on getting the 7 day JR pass for traveling the second week in Japan, or should I get the 14 day pass? Since the cost is only an extra $120, do you think I would come close to spending $120 with going to and from Tokyo an hour away for a week?
