Exactly how far is the Kagoshima train station is from Kagoshima airport. Do I take a bus or another train to get from the station to the airport

It takes 40min by direct-route bus to Cenral Station and 55min by bus via Yoshino/Ishiki. Both buses leave the airport every 20 min and you can buy a ticket at Bus Ticket Counter near Exit 3. (outside of the building)
If your hotel is near Central station or Tenmonkan, you can take both buses. If your hotel is near Kinseicho, however, take a bus via Yoshino/Ishiki.
By the way, there's Ashiyu (foot onsen bath) near #1 Bus Stop. You can use it for free of charge :)
