Please tell me more about seeing the bamboo forest in Arashiyama - how do I get there from Kyoto station, best time to go, how long does it take to tour, etc. Thanks.

Access to Arashiyama and the location of the bamboo forest is explained here: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3912.htmlThe bamboo forest can get crowded, but I find it more atmospheric without too much crowds. Therefore, I recommend to go on a weekday outside of the holiday seasons, if possible. Early morning and late evening are also calmer and nice (unless there are special events), although the forest gets quite dark after sunset. Many of the other attractions also close around 17:00.

Take mosquito repellent if you are going in summer or autumn- the worst mosquito bites I have ever had I got in the bamboo forest there.
