Cormorant Fishing 2008/8/31 19:29
Is it still possible to see Cormorant fishing in early October. If so, where is nearest place from either Tokyo or Kyoto. I am staying in both places from 30 Sept to 8 Oct. Thanks anyone.

Now that was easy to Google! Cormoran fishing in Gifu starts mid May and ends by mid-October. It takes place in the evening, starting at 6:30 pm and ending by 9 pm.(it will be likely cold and dark on the river)
Gifu is in the center of Japan, west of Tokyo. The train trip from Tokyo takes 2hrs 15 minutes via Nagoya, where you may wish to stay the night before and the same night you see the cormorans. it cost 11 000 yen (roughly US $ 105 now) ONE WAY from Tokyo. It would make sense to visit Kyoto (1hr south of Nagoya and 3 hrs west of Tokyo) at the same time and even to stay in Kyoto rather than Nagoya before /after the Gifu trip (1hr 30 mn from Kyoto). In that case a 7 day JR pass would make $ sense.

It's available just outside Kyoto 2008/9/6 05:21
Read my post in this site under "Arashiyama" which is on the outskirts of Kyoto. We went there a couple of summers ago and apart from the cormorant fishing, you could do the boat trip and visit the bamboo forest (as shown in the Hollywood film, Memoirs of a Geisha). You'll enjoy Arashiyama.

We went to Uji in January and thought how cool it would be to watch the cormorant fishing:
