Picture from Odaiba 2008/9/29 10:49
I was just wondering where the main photo of the Tokyo page was taken from.

http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2164.html

I noticed it is taken from higher up than where I took pictures of it. (which was around Decks and Aquacity)

Thanks.

I also took a similar shot from the public ovservatory platform in Odaiba with the small Statue of Liberty.

For a comparison purpose, I also put the real Statue of Liberty taken from the Staten Island Ferry in NYC.

Maritime museum, almost 2008/9/30 07:50
I have a similar picture I took from the observation deck at the Maritime museum too. Mine was a little hazy because it was July. It gives a pretty good view though.

Thanks for the replies.

optimistk, can you give me a better idea of where you took that shot? (very nice pics btw!)

Also, I couldn't get very nice night photos with my camera.

Could this be because it is just a regular digital camera, or are there some settings I can switch to make it better? (I tried, but couldn't find a setting that worked.)

My camera is HP Photosmart R937.

Thanks for all the help!

Thank you for your compliment.

I took the photo from the observation platform near the Fuji TV Broadcasting Building.

You can easily spot where mine was taken.

As my tripod broke down when I took the photo, I held my DSLR (D50) to a railing with ISO increased to 800. This is the only ok image, IIRC.

You might want to consider purchasing a compact tripod to take beautiful night shots for your future travels.

A tripod enables me to take this kind of photo easily once I got the hang of it.

BTW, when you travel to New York, you might take the Staten Island Boat. It's free, and you can capture the Statue of Liberty from the immediate vicinity. The boat leaves from Subway South Ferry Station (#1). Sorry for the off topic talk.

There's an open deck area as you exit the train right of the Nikko hotel and left of Aqua city,

You can clearly see the location here on the Japan guide page:
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3008.html

Here's a trick I use with a cheap digital camera if you don't have a tripod, lay the camera down and not touching it, there's railing there near the bridge you can put it on, set your camera then set your camera to autocountdown and auto photomode, don't touch the camera at all, let the countdown do its work and take the photo. Most shaky blurry photos are due to handmovement, no matter how steady you think you can stand, it is no replacement for either a tripod or just letting your camera sit without touching it.

As for the statue of liberty. Not sure if the one in New York is really the one you should be comparing it to.

The Statue of Liberty in Odaiba is actually a replica of one that can be found in Paris, if I recall it was in Japan for a while before being returned, then they made a replica of it in Odaiba.

If you want comparison, check out the one in Paris, since you can also see the Eiffle Tower like how you can see Tokyo Tower from Odaiba.

Sorry for bringing this thread back.

I got myself a Gorillapod, seems it will work great.

How can I take good photos through glass, at night with my digital camera? Like in Tokyo Tower, the Shinjuku Government Twin Towers.

Thanks so much!

Use the "Night scene" setting on your camera (if it has one) and use the self-timer (many cameras have a 2-second timer for this purpose) to avoid camera shake when pressing the shutter release. And make sure the flash is turned off.
