if i purchase a jr tokunai day pass, when is the day pass acitivated for one day. can i purchase today and use the pass a few days after purchase.

I'm not sure, I assume it is activated when you insert it through the ticket gate.
HOWEVER, there is no reason for you to purchase it a few days in advance. The pass is sold at all JR station vending machines (in the Tokunai area). So it takes about one minute to purchase (Press english/discount tickets/tokunai pass). No real reason to purchase it in advance.
