Best way to travel from Tokyo to Sapporo

I'm planning to go to Sapporo from Tokyo on the 21st Dec. Preferrably I'll be staying there for 4 days. I'll be going there with my sister (who's currently studying in Japan - she's a foreign student). So what's the best way to get there? I'll have a JR pass.
These are the options I'm thinking of:
1. Travel from Tokyo to Sapporo by overnight train and stop by at Hakodate and then fly back to Tokyo.
2. Fly to and from Sapporo.
Which one would be the best way to go? And which is usually the cheapest?
Thanks

The best way to travel between the two cities is the airplane. If you have a Japan Rail Pass, I recommend to take the shinkansen and limited express trains via Hachinohe and Hakodate, but it will be a very long trip. By night train, you have to pay a supplement. All your option are explained here: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5306.html

How much is the cheapest return airfare (in AU$)? And if my sister's a foreign student studying in Japan, how much would it cost for her to go to Sapporo by train?
