hello,
i'm in osaka and planing a few day's trip to nara (1d), humeji (1d) and kyoto (1-2d), not necessarily on consecutive days.
there are so many passes available and i get confused.
the plan is not fixed to certain days, unless the pass will require me to...

Not on Budget? Buy Kansai Thru Pass

If you're not travelling on a strict budget, better buy the Kansai Thru Pass. You could use any available transport. However if you're on a budget, perhaps a combination of 1 day bus or train ticket would work.
I myself will be using the 2 days Kansai Thru Pass for my trip around Kyoto, then the JR West Pass for trip from Kyoto to Fushimi Inari Shrine & Himeji.

1 day JR West Pass for Himeji
ICOCA Smart Card or Surutto Kansai Prepaid Card for round trip Osaka - Kyoto and 1 day bus pass within Kyoto
ICOCA Smart Card or Surutto Kansai Prepaid Card for Nara
Note that Kansai Thru Pass is not valid for JR but Subways and Private Railways in Kansai Region.
