Janome Island? 2008/11/2 18:38
I was just wondering if there was really such a place called "Janome Island" being an island of serpents?

I did some search for it, but unfortunately, it didn't turned out right.

Is there another name for the island? I do know that in edo period, they called it "Janome Island". Has its name changed through time?

I'm sure there hasn’t ever been the island that was called Janome.
I have searched by google in Japanese 蛇の目. Many sites have appeared. But all of them are about anime "Telepathy girl Ran". I think Janome Island is a creature of author’s imagination. I guess the author gained an idea from following southern islands.

1. Bonin Islands.
Those are isolated islands, and have indigenous flora, birds and bats.

2. Gaja Island.
Abandoned island near to Amami islands. They say that defeated samurai of Heike clan lived there. Names of two islands (JA-nome and ga-JA) contain meaning of snake "ja" in common.

3. Amami Islands
Poisonous snakes called Habu live in these Islands.

4. Okinawan Islands

Habu live too.
