What does "居たい" mean?

たい: want

Is that right?

たい is an auxiliarie and auxiliaries are adjuncts that are attached to main verbs to give them additional meaning.

たい is attached to the conjunctive form of all verbs to express a first person (I,we) desire to do something

ます and ない are other examples.

so "i want to be" would be my first guess

it can vary depending on the whole text

居たい reads as "itai." The dictionary form of this verb is "iru." masu-form is "imasu."
The meaning is to live/reside, and to be.

"itai" in this case means "I want to be..." as explained earlier.

the kanji by itself would be pronounced kyo or ko. meaning to be, or exist,

but when combined with たい. it is pronounced naritai

居たい = naritai

so ".......ni naritai" would mean "i want to be........"

like i said depending on the whole text it could mean something a little different. translating isnt a exact thing

居たい is read as "itai," not "naritai." "naritai" would be "I want to become (something)."

"itai" = I want to be, would be used in a sentence like:
- Zutto anata to issho ni itai. (I want to be together with you for a long time/forever.)
- Anata no soba ni itai. (I want to be by your side.)

ya after re reading what i wrote. i realized where i got mixed up.

"itai" is rarely written as 居たい . its usually written as いたい.

so when i saw 居たい , i did a quick translation. not a exact thing, something simple.

didnt want them to confuse it with 痛い. and its also why i said it read as "kyo". beacause "iru" can mean many things depending on the kanji.

i feel bad know because i want to explain the difference between iru and naru
