Fragrance-free soap in Japan? 2008/11/16 22:42
I've been living in Japan for about three months now, and my sensitive skin simply cannot take the body wash I have been using. Does anyone know of a Japanese brand of soap that is fragrance free? My language proficiency is not good enough to read the labels on Japanese shower gels, so I can't find out which ones are for sensitive skin.

I also am looking for a fragrance free detergent to wash my clothes.

Thank you so much! I would really appreciate any information you can give me.

Mutenka 2008/11/17 08:40
In many drug stores you will find a brand of liquid soap just called "無添加" (Mutenka), which simply means "no additives". The packaging is green and white and the 3 kanji are very large on the front of the packaging.

If you don't see it try asking the staff for "mutenka body soap" and see what happens.

There are environmetally friendly fragrance free detergents etc. (mostly imported and expensive) available at specialist stores, but you don't say what area of Japan you are in. Do you have a Natural Lawsons in your area (specialist version of Lawsons conbini)? They have a range of environmentally friendly cleaners which might be worth checking out.

Another one you might try 2008/11/17 10:16
If you have sensitive skin, try SebaMed brand (originally German) of body and face wash bar and liquid - they are very mild. In Japan It is sold by Rohto Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. Not all drugstores stock them, but you should be able to find stockists if you ask around a bit.

try natural food stores 2008/11/18 18:02
You can also check out shizen-shokuhin-ten (natural food stores). You see them here and there, but quite often there is one in department store basements.

They not only sell food, but also soap with no unnatural chemicals included. Tell them you need "body soap" as well as "sentaku sekken (soap for laundry)" and they will understand. Among the very leading brands is Pax Naturon.

Supermarkets also sell organic materials and natural soaps, but you might feel more assured at stores that specialise in them.
