17 days travel plan, how to use days 2008/12/2 05:40
hello. ILve 17 full days to travel in Japan. ILm starting and leaving from Tokyo. I want to sstay in Tokyo, and continue my travel like this:

Tokyo - Takayama or/Kanazawa - Kyoto - Nara - (Osaka if possible) -Tokyo.

How long I should stay in Takayama or Kanazawa and in Osaka? ILve been to Kyoto and Nara before, but ILm travelling with someone, whoLs not been there before. I think, I we should stay Kyoto 3days at least, visit 1day Nara... But is it enough? Is Takayama or Kanazawa worth of visit 1 day and 2 days in Osaka? Or do you recommend other places near Kyoto?

Like you see, ILm planning to spend 7 days trip outside Tokyo. ILm thinking is it better to take Japan railway pass for 1 week or I wish to save money by using so-called highway buses. But do I save money?

does anyone know, which is better, Kanazawa or Takayama? And is it possibilities to access by bus there?

Thank you in advance.

Depends on how much you want to see, your interests and on your preferred travel pace. I recommend to spend at least 24 hours each in Takayama and Kanazawa.

If you like a medium to fast pace of travel, I think that 1-2 days is a good time to spend in Takayama and 1-3 days is a good time to spend in Kanazawa. In comparison to that, I think that 2-5 days is a good time to spend in Tokyo and 2-7 days is a good time to spend in Kyoto. For Osaka, I recommend 1-4 days. Just to give you a basic idea.

ILm thinking is it better to take Japan railway pass for 1 week or I wish to save money by using so-called highway buses.

If you do all the travel outside Tokyo within 7 days, a 7-day Japan Rail Pass will be a very good deal in terms of cost, speed of travel and comfort.

But if you do not mind riding night buses with little comfort, you could do the travel even cheaper by buses:

Difficult to compare. japan-guide.com users rated as follows:

Takayama: 4.42 out of 5
Kanazawa: 4.30 out of 5

And is it possibilities to access by bus there?

Yes.
