Train, then bus

When I visited Hakone two years ago, we found that the fastest but still economical way to get there was from Tokyo (I forget which station we left from) to Odawara station by train, and then to Hakone by bus. There are a number of buses that run to and from the station, and the vicinity of it to Hakone makes it a pretty good choice for that. Chances are you'll be able to find a bus route that will go from Odawara to where you're trying to get to, and back. We went to an Onsen in the mountains, and had no troubles getting there and back to the station by bus. The ride by train from Tokyo doesn't take too long either, especially if you take the shinkansen.

To go to Hakone from Tokyo, a good choice is to get a Hakone Free Pass: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2358_008.html A typical route is to ride various means of transports on the Hakone Loop Course: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5210.htmlPlaces of interest along the route include Fujiya Hotel, Yunessun onsen resort, Hakone Open Air Museum, Gora Park, Venetian Glass Museum, Museum of Saint-Exupery and Little Prince, Owakudani, cruise on Lake Ashi, Hakone Checkpoint, Hakone Detached Palace Garden, Hakone Shrine, Cedar Avenue and the Old Tokaido Road. On a clear day when Mt. Fuji is not covered by clouds (which is rare), you can have a pretty good view from the grounds of the Hakone Detached Palace, with view of Lake Ashi and the waterfront torii of the Hakone Shrine as well.

One place I forget to mention is Gotemba which is also included in the Hakone Free Pass. There you can find the Premium Outlets, said to be the largest shopping outlet in Japan.

Hakone Bus / Suica?

Hi there! I'm planning a trip to Hakone from Tokyo as well and I'll be taking the JR Tokaido Shinkansen from Tokyo to Odawara Station. I just have a question about the Hakone Tozan Bus. Can I use the Suica to pay for the bus fare? I saw some information about the Suica / PASMO on the Tozan Bus website so I wonder if these cards can be used outside of Tokyo. Thanks for your help!
