Plenty of homes that except pets! 2009/9/10 11:31
We just moved to Japan a couple months ago with our two 18 pound rat terriers. We found that although your choices are limited somewhat, you can still find plenty of home owner's that will rent to pet owners. You might have a harder time if you have a large dog though. I also found that owners were more inclined to rent to people with small dogs than they were to people with cats. For some reason, they seem to think cats will damage the home more than dogs will. Sign yourself up with all the housing agents right off 16. We probably went to 10 + housing agents! They are there to help you and are very eager to find you a home. Don't settle for a home that you are not completely happy with right away. Homes pop up every day, and you want to make sure you get in the house you'll be happy living in for the next several years. We found a house the very first day we went out house hunting, but waited and found another home that we liked even better! Also, go to the on base housing office (if you can) and see what they have to offer. We actually found our house through the housing office. They have tons of homes for you to look. A listing of each home is posted in a number of binders with pictures and home information. All you do is pick out the home that you want to view and the housing agent will call the home owner's agent for you to schedule a time to go see it. A lot of the times, the agent can pick you up right at the Navy Lodge! It's very convenient. Good luck to anyone out there that just moved to Japan! Although the whole move process is stressful, you will find that it will be worth it in the end! This our 3rd time in Japan. It's an awesome country! We love living here and feel so lucky to have the opportunity to live here again! :-)

Extra month for security deposit 2009/9/10 11:44
I almost forgot to mention.....you will probably have to pay an extra month (or two depending on the home owner) for the security deposit. Be prepared for that. You will pay 1st month's rent, agent fee, owner's gift, and security deposit up front. If you have pets, two months security deposit. So, that's 5 times the monthly rent. Our home is 300,000Y per month, so we had to fork out 1,500,000Y (over $16,000). Ouch. Make sure you have the funds available prior to coming here. It is very expensive to move in a home in Japan. If you are military, then you will get some of that back, but you are still responsible for all of the security deposit. You will get it back as long as the home isn't damaged when you leave.
