what kind of rail pass? 2008/12/24 18:46
Hello, I will be traveling to Japan in Jan-Feb, going to places like:

1) Tokyo
2) Shiga Kogen
3) Kanazawa
4) Shirakawa-Go
5) Takayama
6) Nagoya
7) Kyoto

Was wondering what kind of pass would be the cheapest to travel around on the rails, trains and bus rides. Thanks

A more detailed itinerary is needed in order to be able to answer your question, i.e. how many days you spend where and through which airports you enter/leave Japan.

But most likely, travel by highway buses will be the cheapest option:

thanks for the replying here are more info:

Will be there around 7-10 days
Entering from Tokyo airport (but going straight to nagano city)
Will be leaving from either osaka or nagoya airport.

Mainly, these are the places that we will be going:

1) Zenkoji Temple
2) Monkey Park
3) Yudanaka Onsen

4) Kenrokuen Garden (Kanazawa)
5) Nagamachi Samurai District
6) Omicho Market
7) Shirakawa-Go

8) Nagoya or Kyoto (Transiting through Takayama)

Not decided as I am not too sure if there is enough time to travel down to both places, was thinking of traveling of to either one of them and visit Takayama and Kiso Valley. Anyway, is there any fishing village or town near Shiga Kogen or Kanazawa area?

Thanks for your help!

I recommend the following route:

Tokyo - (bus or train) - Nagano with side trips - (bus or train) - Matsumoto - (bus) - Takayama - (bus) - Shirakawago - (bus) - Kanazawa - (bus or train) - Kyoto - Osaka's Kansai Airport

For the above route, single tickets will come cheaper than any rail pass.
