Reservation for Special Rapid JR? 2009/1/7 13:58
Hi,

Just wondering if you have to make a reservation for the Special Rapid JR trains like you do for the Shinkansen? I have a JR national pass.

Thank you!!

Rapid trains 2009/1/7 14:42
Sasa,

In most cases, you cannot reserve seats on rapid trains, as they are just regular commuter trains that miss out a few stops.
Which particular train(s) were you interested in?

Hi, thanks for your prompt reply!

I will be travelling on a Special Rapid train from Kyoto to Osaka on the JR Kyoto Line.

Thanks again!

Not to worry, that's an unreserved commuter train with very frequent service. During rush hour, you're lucky to even get a seat!

as most other passengers do 2009/1/7 16:32
Pass through the staffed ticket gate(by showing your JR Pass), find and go to the platform, just get on the Special Rapid Train, get off after 30 minutes, get out from any staffed gate of the station(by showing your JR Pass).

This is what most passengers do when traveling between Kyoto and Osaka by JR.

If you really want ... 2009/1/7 21:20
If you realy insist on a reserved seat , like on the shinkansen
just walk into the JR ticket office located at the train station.
Just tell them where you wish to go and they'll place the tickets , and even give you a detailed discription on where to change trains etc. if that is necessary ....

Nowhere in the world is traveling by train easier than in Japan

Except that seat reservations are impossible for Special Rapid Trains because there are no reserved seatings on them.

As mentioned, no there is no extra surcharge for that train or most other JR Special Rapid trains. (eg Chuo Line Special Rapid in the Tokyo area).
