How can I wear my hair like a Geisha? 2004/6/7 22:12
Hello!

I need some suggestions or instructions how to create a Geisha's hair. Unfortunately I didn't find anything exactly about this in the internet. Or perhaps something about a Geisha's hair ornaments.

Many greetings* Anja

Do you have very long hair or a lot of extensions?

Most geisha trust their doos to a specialist who trains for years to master the art, though I see no reason why you couldn't produce some close approximation if you have a lot of time, hairspray and pictures for reference.

Good luck.

Buy a wig 2004/6/21 15:07
The easiest way is to order a Geisha wig. I do not know if real Geiko-san's do this way but some ready-made wigs (called Katsura) are with all accessories needed.
Go to Komachi-Hair shop on Nakamise Street in Asakusa, just in front of Sensoji Temple.

Anja,

Which shop did you find? I have been looking for either a wig or instructions for making a katsura myself and have found pictures, but no English language instructions. I would appreciate any info!

Thanks!

geisha hair 2004/10/22 14:30
I stumbled upon this during my quest for the secrets of geisha hairstyling. and pretty much had the same luck... not a single printed instruction manual. i decided to dress as a geisha (as acurately as possible) for a nearby anime convention that i go to each year with friends. however, i did find something that may help you out in your search... there was a hair dresser i read about in the washington post online from kyoto, who recently published a step-by-step manual on how he creates these intricate styles. his name is Tetsuo Ishihara. i am just about to do a search for books by him. perhaps you could do the same if the wig does not work out for you? good luck! and it is always nice to meet new people!

facts 2006/4/5 08:55
Taka Shimada,a high chignon (a kind of knot of hair), usually worn by young, single women; Tsubushi shimada, a more flattened chignon generally worn by older women; Uiwata, a chignon that is usually bound up with a piece of color cotton crepe; and a style that ends up looking like a divided peach, typically worn by maiko. These hairstyles were decorated with elaborate hair-combs and hairpins, which often symbolized status

short hair sytle or up-do is ok 2006/4/5 09:36
when wearing kimono, it is customary to wear your hair in an up-do or wear it short. This is to show the neck. It looks awkward if your hair is worn long.

If you can't do a "geisha" hair style, just put it up in a flattering style for you.

Maybe this will help you 2007/11/21 22:35
Hi! i know how to "imitate" the geisha's hairstyle... its maybe not exactly the real traditional hairstyle, but its the closer thing i was able to do...(sorry for my bad english)
You got to start with wet hair.
1.separate the front hair from the back hair ( make the limite from ear to ear)

2.now yu need some hairwax or something VERY sticky . Put it on ALL your hair but keep the separation.

4.comb the back hair and make a pongtail very high on your head. the hair Above the neck must be smooth, and tense...

5.comb the front side of the hair. you can put more wax on it.

6.take the middle of the front hair and fix it strongly just in front of the pongtail. you must comb to put some "volum".

7.attach the rest of the middle front hair with the pongtail.

8.make the same for the both sides of the middle hair, put alot of wax and dont forget to put volum and to fix it strongly.

9.take your dryer and dry the 3 parts of the front hair (the ones you just styled. they shoud now be hard. put some hairspray to make it harder.

10.now all you have to do is to stylish the pongtail.make an updo with it, get some inspiration from pictures of geishas, be creative! dont forget to drye it when its done and put some hairspray.

11.now you can decorate it with combs, flowers, etc... you can put a red ribbon on the front..

VOILA! i hope this helped you...

katsura 2008/3/11 11:55
miko and geiko/ geisha do wear wigs called katsura they are easy to maintain and have to be restyled about once a month when in full use (as in every evening) they were first used at the spring dances every year when dancers had to have a different hairstyle for every part and to have their own hair done whould take too long now most geisha do rely on wigs
