It takes nearly 4hrs one way depending on what combination of trains you take. Narita isn't the most practical place to stay if one want to explore both Tokyo and areas away from it (except for the area around the town of Narita)

It is possible, but you will spend 7-8 hours in the train or bus. The fastest way is by train via Tokyo. There are many possible routes, which can be looked up here (enter "naritaairport" and "nikko"): http://grace.hyperdia.com/cgi-english/hyperWeb.cgiWith good connections, you can make the one way trip in approach is by Keisei Skyliner, Tohoku Shinkansen and via Ueno Station
