Snow in Ogimachi in March? 2009/3/8 10:11
Will Ogimachi be covered in snow around end of March?
Am planning to visit Shirakawa-go (Ogimachi) end of March, and would like to enjoy the view of village with snow covered houses.

Thanks and Regards,
Usha

Sorry, I keep confusing March and May recently!

Here is the height of snow in Ogimachi on March 31 of past years:
2008: 1 cm
2007: 0 cm
2006: 165 cm
2005: 87 cm
2004: 12 cm
2003: 39 cm
2002: 0 cm
2001: 47 cm
2000: 76 cm

It is just around the time when the snow disappears. Sometimes it has all gone already. More often, there is still a little bit (sometimes a lot) left.

We went to Shirakawa-go around mid April last year. No snow at all and to our surprise it is very hot & sunny at mid-day, But the temperature drops in the evening.

Shirakawago 2009/3/17 22:01
Has anyone been there last weekend? My trip is postponed for the long weekend.
Can anyone advise if there is still any snow left there?

Thanks,
Usha

According to the weather agency, there is currently no more snow on the grounds in Ogimachi. In fact, there has not been any substantial snow since February 26, which is rather unusual.

There is still a chance of new snow, though.

February in Shirakawa -go 2009/3/18 11:30
I was in Shirakawa -go on February 3 this year. I took a bus from Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go. There were snow on the open field, not much, and the mountains as well. The roads were mostly clear. I noticed in Shirakawa-go, all the roads and walkways in the village were clear and not much snow on the open field as well. The roofs of most of the huts in the village were not covered with snow either. It means it was not snowing at all for the past few days. It was a cool sunny day. I went up the hill and had a bird-eye view of the village, the winter scenery was just too beautiful.
