We`ve bought the JR-rail pass. Is it possible to reserve a seat for different times on one day. For example we´ve reserve a seat at 8.00 p.m. but we´d like to go one hour earlier at 7.00 pm.. Do we have to cancel the 8.00 pm. reservation then?
Will it do if we reserve the seat short time before we´ll going or better one day before?

Yes, you should cancel your old reservation when making the new reservation.

Most of the time it will do. One day in advance will always do except on some exceptionally busy days (e.g. some peak days during Golden Week, etc.).

Don't book tickets if you are not using them. Just book before you leave.
I don't think it makes sense to double or triple book, then, only use one. You must cancel if you are not using them.
