April 5th, Too late for hanami in Tokyo? 2009/3/22 18:30
I just read that Tokyo's cherry trees opened yesterday, March 21. I'll be walking Tokyo's streets next April 5. I'm afraid that by then it's going to be too late for the cherry blossom splendor. Am I right? I've been looking at this weeks weather forecast and it seems that temperatures are dropping, and at least 3 consecutive days of rain are expected. Is this favorable to my interests?

It will probably be towards the end of or past the peak, but under normal circumstances, you should probably still see some blossoms, unless strong rain and wind takes them down prematurely.

Even if you miss the "mainstream" season, you can still enjoy a picnic under the late-blooming cherry varieties, although, they are less numerous and peopel don't make such a fuss around them anymore. Shinjuku Gyoen is a particularly pleasant place to enjoy late flowering cherry trees.
