walking from Kyoto station to Gion

We are staying at a hotel across the street from the Kyoto Station. Is it possible /safe to walk to the Gion District?
How long will it take? Or can we take a train or subway there. How long does that take?

It is safe to walk around in Kyoto. From Kyoto station to Gion it is about 3 to 4 km, you can go by bus no 100 or 206 at Yen 220 one ride or Yen 500 1 day city bus ticket.
