I will be in Tokyo in the middle of April and would like to see cherry blossom. According to the forecast in that period it should be possible to do that in Nagano, Niigata and Sendai. Which one would you suggest for a day trip from Tokyo (by shinkansen)? Thanks a lot!

Takada Castle in Takada Park (Takada Koen) has 3,000 trees and is very famous. ( http://myoko-nojiri.com/events.htm) It will take about 3-4 hours to get there from Tokyo. Take the shinkansen to Nagano and then the local train to Naoetsu. Get off at Takada Station - it's about a 10 minute walk. With this trip you could also add in Nagano (Zenkoji Temple - http://zenkoji.jp) and Sado Island ( http://mijintl.com/) if you wanted.
