Visiting North Japan in September

Hi
We are planning a trip to Japan in 5-20 September 09. We wanted to visit Nagano and/or Hokkaido. We mainly would like to do day trips/hikes and see beautiful nature. Would you recommend visiting those areas in September (given weather, bloom times etc)? Which specific parks/places would you recommend to visit?
