Japan guide in December

Hi, We are thinking of going to Shinjuku, Tokyo in December from 27th - 4th January. We have been told that this is Japan's holiday and alot of attractions and shops would be closed at this time. Just wondering is it going to be worth visiting? We would like to do both, shopping and sightseeing, does anyone know if Sanrio Puroland, Pokemon land, will be opened? I have looked at the sanrio website but they are not showing december opening hours at present. Does anyone have other recommendations where to visit during this time?
Thanks for your patience! :D

Actually on January 1st you can expect most stores to be closed. On January 2nd though they should all be open.
