Kyoto to Furano JR, stop off at Takayama

Ive been considering to go to Takayama on the way to Furano from Kyoto.
Leave the kyoto ryokan on the 30th early morning, go to takayama, walk around old town etc. catch the overnight train to furano.
Is there a good route for this on the JR Pass?
Shud i make a stop half way from kyoto-furano instead of takayama?
I really want to go to furano/biei!

Takayama is not along the way, and therefore, does not fit into one day.
And note that night trains to Hokkaido are not fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass.
The best route would be Kyoto - Nagoya - Takayama - Toyama and then catch the Twilight Express from Toyama at 16:31. But you would have almost no time in Takayama, and there is a surcharge for using the Twilight Express.
