JR or Hokkaido rail pass? 2009/5/21 09:49
JR is more expensive but a travel agent said it included subway. Web sites don't confrim that either pass includes it. If just visiting Hokkaido, is there any benefit in the JR vs the Hokkaido pass? Also, looking to confirm web note that pass can be purchased in japan. Old docs say it had to be purchased before arriving.

I assume that with JR you are referring to the "Japan Rail Pass".

The Japan Rail Pass is not valid on subways. It is only valid on JR trains and local JR buses.

The Hokkaido Rail Pass is valid on JR trains and local JR buses in Hokkaido.

If you travel only inside Hokkaido, the Japan Rail Pass gets you no advantages over the Hokkaido Rail Pass!
