Found the ferries great everywhere. We went into Fukuoka first, then Oita-Shikoku-Hiroshima back.

do you think it would be worth going to kagoshima and getting the ferry from there or would that be the same cost as a flight from fukuoka?

Flights are generally the cheapest and easiest way to get to Okinawa. A discount flight from Fukuoka to Okinawa can be cheaper than the ferry from Kagoshima.

Skymark Airlines, in particular offers very cheap flights on the Fukuoka-Naha route. Around 10,000 yen one way if you book early in advance. Even the regular fare is a relatively low 15,800 yen!
