Getting to Gujo-Hachiman

Is it possible to get to Gujo-Hachiman from Gero, or can you only get there by going south from Shirakawago/Takayama or north from Nagoya/Gifu?

If you have a car, you can traverse the mountains between the two towns by following national route 256. By public transportation, it is probably fastest to take trains via Mino-Ota.
