NRT to JyomoKogen Station 2009/6/16 05:23
I am traveling to a hotel in Minakami. They want to know what time I will arrive so that they can have a shuttle there. My plane gets into NRT at 1:10 PM and I plan to travel by train to Tokyo Station to JyomoKogen Station (bullet train). With customs to go through, (carry on luggage only) and finding my way around knowing English only, I cannot figure out how long it will take. I would appreciate any help you can give.

Note that the standard romanization is Jomo Kogen. Timetable websites will not understand Jyomo (Hyperdia only understands "Jomokogen" without space, by the way).

Flight arrival and the time for immigration are things you cannot predict, as flight delays are not uncommon. Once you touch down, it usually does not take more than one hour until you pass immigration and customs, although on busy days it could take longer. So, in case of a scheduled arrival, I think it is save to eye for a train departure around 90 minutes after arrival time.

Train connections to Jomo Kogen can be looked up here:

If the hotel needs to know the exact arrival time, I recommend to give them a call after arrival at Narita Airport. Or agree on a time and call only in case that you missed the planned train (or can catch an earlier one).

RE: NRT to Jomo-Kogen Station 2009/6/16 14:28
: My plane gets into NRT at 1:10 PM

At Narita Airport, JR-East and another company each have two stations:
- Narita Airport Stn. (Terminal 1)
- Airport Terminal 2 Stn.
Whether Terminal 1 or 2 depends on your flight.

All the seats of JR-East Narita Express trains (for Tokyo) require reservation.
JR-East Joetsu Shinkansen trains (for Jomo-Kogen) may have seats without reservation.
Probably it's possible to get a fare ticket, a N'EX ticket, a Shinkansen Ticket together at once at the airport station.

: I cannot figure out how long it will take.

If you catch a N'EX and all the things go well,
you may pass a Shinkansen gate within 90 minutes after you leave the airport station
(55 to 65 minutes on a N'EX, 15 to 25 minutes for the transfer, excluding a waiting time).
But, you may need 80 minutes more if unfortunately you fail to reserve a N'EX seat or you miss your N'EX.
In that case, check the departure times of the following NEX and the earliest rapid;
if you can reserve the following N'EX seat before the the earliest rapid, you don't have to catch the rapid.
A rapid train costs about 90 minutes,
and arrives at a platform lying deep under the ground, from which you may need 25 to 35 minutes for the transfer.

Be sure that you take a Shinkansen of JR-East, not of JR-Central.
At Tokyo Stn., plural Shinkansen services (Tohoku, Yamagata, Akita, Joetsu, Nagano) of JR-East have gates in common.

: Tokyo Station to JyomoKogen Station (bullet train)

Not JyomoKogen, but Jomo-Kogen.
JR-East usually put a macron (short bar above a letter) for a long o, which is sometimes omitted.
JR companies use "superexpress" or "super-express" but don't officially use "bullet train."

Time Tables (just as a guide)
For the way forward:
- Narita Express

- Joetsu Shinkansen (Pay attention to "Operation date"!!)

- Narita Express

Fare and Charges (one way, ordinary-class seat with reservation)
- Fare (Airport - Jomo-Kogen): 3,890 yen per adult
- Charge for Narita Express: 1,460 to 1,860 yen per adult
- Charge for Shinkansen: 3,030 yen to 3,430 yen per adult

Correction: N'EX 2009/6/17 02:53
I'm very sorry but let me correct a mistake.
I missed the important fact that N'EX and Airport Rapid share the same platforms at Tokyo.
(If here is someone knowing an exception, please point it out.)

NOT:
you may pass a Shinkansen gate within 90 minutes after __
(55 to 65 minutes on a N'EX, 15 to 25 minutes for the transfer, excluding a waiting time).

BUT:
you may pass through a Shinkansen gate within 100 minutes after __

NOT:
A rapid train costs about 90 minutes,

BUT:
A rapid train costs about 90 minutes.
N'EX and rapid trains arrive at platforms lying deep under the ground in Tokyo Stn. building.

Sorry again. I hope you have a nice trip!
