Round trip in August 2009/6/21 23:03
Hi,
we will travel to Japan in August. We've already booked the rooms, our planned program would be:
Aug 21 arrival to Narita Airport early in the morning
Aug 21-23 Koya San (2 nights)
Aug 23-26 Kyoto (3 n)
Aug 26-29 Fuji/Kawaguchi-ko (3 n)
Aug 29 - Sept 2 Tokyo (4 n)
Sept 2 departure from Narita Airport

Do you find it a feasible program?
I would like to get your advice which train pass(es) should we buy? Is it worth to choose the 14d JR Pass even it is not valid in Fuji area? Or?

We would like to climb Mt. Fuji from Kawaguchi-ko 5th Station as well.

Thank you in advance!

Are you going straight to Koya San from Narita airport? Do you realise that it will take over 6 hours by train with numerous train transfers?

You can look up train times and schedules here:

Yes, I realized it. 2009/6/22 16:01
Thanks, I've already checked this web site (hyperdia).
I think we can manage it.

HYPERDIA seems to reject station names with hyphen....
"Shin-Osaka" was rejected, "ShinOsaka" was accepted.

: Is it worth to choose the 14d JR Pass even it is not valid in Fuji area?

No. JR regular railroad cost is estimated at about 38,000 yen per adult,
on the supposition that you utilize only non-Shinkansen trains between Nagoya and Otsuki
when you visit Kawaguchiko and Mt. Fuji.
Using a 7-day JR Pass, you may make the JR cost lower by 3,620 yen.
- JR regular railroad cost: 37,890 yen per adult;
- - A 7-day JR Pass (Aug. 21 - 27): 28,300 yen per adult,
- - JR regular railroad cost (the rest): 5,970 yen per adult.
- Other railroad cost: 5,220 yen per adult.

JR Pass for ordinary-class seats
(for JR trains, JR local bus lines, some JR highway bus services, JR Miyajima Ferry)
- A 14-day Pass: 45,100 yen per adult.
- A 7-day Pass : 28,300 yen per adult.
A JR Pass can cover all JR trains except those of Shinkansen Nozomi service.
To get a JR Pass, your legal status "Temporary Visitor" is a must.

Your draft doesn't look a hectic one, but it seems a little hard to me....
I think you'd better limit the number of the sites you visit in Kyoto and in Tokyo, and consult your stamina all the way.
