Overnight in Tokyo

I am arriving at Narita airport on Monday at 5pm (1700) and my connection flight does not leave until Tuesday 5pm (1700) the next day. I was going to take the Narita Express into Tokyo and stay in a inexpensive hotel close to Tokyo station such as Hotel Metropolitan and then go to Imperial Palace and the area to sight see. Is this a good idea of hotel and something to do on the lay over?

Yes, I think it is a good idea. The hotel is very good, but I would not call it inexpensive.
Instead of the Imperial Palace, you could also see other attractions around Tokyo Station, depending on your interest.
