Go buy the 10000yen Special JR East Pass if Karuizawa is a must to u. A round trip of that is well over the cost of the pass. Please note that it only cover three days but can be used non-consecutively. I think this should be great for you.

not only Tokyo 2009/7/14 13:58
Note that both Karuizawa and Gotemba are well outside Tokyo, and are in fact two prefectures away- Karuizawa is in Nagano prefecture and Gotemba is in Shizuoka prefecture. You definitely can't say that itinerary is only in Tokyo.

Add-on question 2009/7/16 18:40
I have a add-on question regarding William's answer.

Note that the 10000 yen special JR East flexible 3-day pass is good for use only from Sept.1 to Dec. 31, 2009.

If I'am going to Japan mid/end of Dec.2009, is that means I cannot use this special JR East Pass anymore? Because the link provided by William mentioned:

Exchange of the exchange order through Tuesday, 1 Dec. 2009

And I am able to exchange it only after I reach Japan (mid of Dec).

Thanks.

It's my understanding that you have to exchange for the pass before Dec. 1, and only after you arrive in Japan. So if you arrive after Dec. 1, you can't get the pass even if you have bought the voucher before Dec. 1.

If you want to vertify and to be 100% sure, maybe you can e-mail JR East for a definite answer:
