Get gaikokuujin tourokusyoumeisyo first 2009/7/22 11:08
It is a must for any person who is staying in Japan for longer then 3 month to have a foreigners registration card, which you can not obtain without a permanent address. If you are planning to stay in Japan for around one year, you will have to apply for the registration card. This card enabled you to open an account in any bank.

Yes, you will need a gaijin card to open an account; and an address to get a gaijin card; AND everytime you move you will need to update your gaijin card at the local ward/district office.

Hey, nobody said Japan was easy. ;)

Which visa? 2009/7/22 11:26
Are you coming on a working holiday visa? If you want to travel on an ordinary tourist visa, the maximum is 3 months/90 days.

If you are on a WH visa you will have to state an address to get your alien registration card- even a short term one is fine. Then you can open a bank account.
