Hi,
Just to seek some clarification as it's my first time travelling to Japan with a group of friends. The previous time I went was when I was very much younger and unaware of much.
The 7/14 day pass enables us to take unlimited train rides. Does that include short distances, e.g. from Ikebukuro to Hamamatsucho, and long distances, e.g. from Tokyo to Osaka?

Yes, it includes any rides on JR trains, including short rides on JR trains.
e.g. from Ikebukuro to Hamamatsucho
Yes, the JR Yamanote Line connects the two stations and can be used with the Japan Rail Pass.
and long distances, e.g. from Tokyo to Osaka?
Yes, the JR Tokaido Line connects the two cities and can be used with the Japan Rail Pass (except nozomi trains).
