Please, could your give me some tips on: - is it easy to travel in Japan by car (Honshu and Shikoku)? - are the villages and main roads identified in English? Thanks!

If you are ok with driving on left it's fine. Driven a lot of Kyushu etc.and it's easy - mainly some English on signs and car will have GPS (Jap.). Ask the depot to explain how it works.

It is easy on the countryside, but can be confusing in big cities.

Most signs along major roads (expressways, national routes, major regional routes) are bilingual (Japanese and English). Even trilingual (Russian) in northern Hokkaido.
