Losing weight for Japan? 2009/8/16 11:14
Hi, I'm a plus size 20 yr old american woman and trying to lose weight within 3 yrs after I finish college to live in Japan. My shape would be a Hour glass shape. Would I be able to find any clothes in Japan?

hard to say 2009/8/16 21:15
Without knowing your height and actual size, it's very hard for us to tell you that, however the majority of women's clothing shops in Japan carry a very small range of sizes, often only small and medium (and those are Japanese sizes, so smaller than the US equivalent).

I am a US size 6 but often find that I am too big in the hips and thighs for clothes in many shops, (plus I am 5'9") so I have to go to Zara and Gap or specialist tall size shops (there are plus size shops also) to find clothes that fit.

I find myself doing a lot of shopping overseas rather than here, especially for pants and shoes.

A chain called Uniqlo, which is everywhere, has a much larger range of sizes.

I'm not even plus size but hard for me! 2009/8/16 21:32
I'm 165cm and 53kg, I have a hard time finding pants that fit me in Japan!

I fit medium size shirts in Japan, but often couldn't get sz 11 pants to fit my booty!

My upper half is US size 2/lower half is US size 6. I so feel plus sized in Japan.

What's wrong with me?! I weigh less than than most japanese girls wearing sz 11 pants and I couldn't even fit!

Nothing's wrong with you. Different gene pool means different body shapes. You're not Japanese, so there is no need to compare your body shape to that of Japanese women or be able to fit into clothes designed for a different body type.

Just wondering 2009/8/16 21:52
Is 165cm and 53kg slender/just right/fat in a japanese person's eyes?

I often get compliments for being slim, but that must be because they only paid attention to my upper half.

So basically it's going to be hard either way but if I can lose alot of weight there maybe slight chance I can be able to fit something??? What about a Yukata???

depends on who you ask- I am the same size as you (165/53kg). My Japanese female friends give me diet tips and think that 48-50kg would be about right for me XD; The guys I have dated (including current bf) and male friends, on the other hand, have told me my 'chubby thighs' are cute and they like that I'm a bit rounder, and any mention of me trying to lose weight is shot down quickly (as opposed to me girl friends, where if I mention I want to lose weight the answer is "yes you should. and I should too").

To the OP: As far as buying clothes, I just avoid pants completely. With so many cute skirts in this country I don't even need to torture myself trying to find pants that fit. I have several plus sized friends here who can usually find stretchy tops and skirts with elastic at some department stores, but the selection is limited. OTOH, most trendy fashion is ridiculously small. If you're trying to move from say a 14 to a 4 it might be worth it, but even 8-10 is pushing it for finding trendy fitting clothes. And you might lose weight here just from all the walking/biking- I dropped about 10 pounds with no effort just from all the exercise! So I wouldn't kill yourself to lose weight just to fit into clothes in Japan.
