i'm thinking of working in okinawa next summer with a working holiday visa (i'm british) and then in the september i start 1 year at a japanese university (as part of my british university degree) with a student visa. if i don't go back to the UK between the two, how would the visa thing workout?? would i be able to stay in japan or would i have to go home first before i go to japan to start university? i'm kinda confused!!

As far as I understood you will have WHV when you arrive to Japan. There is no necessity for you to go back to Britain as you can easily go to any immigration office inside Japan and change the status of your working holiday visa to student or pre-college one.
