Smoking in Tokyo? 2009/9/7 13:04
Hi, I rembemer seeing that smoking on the sidewalk in tokyo is banned... Is this everywhere? Are there signs?

I'd appreciate any info on smoking regulations before my trip, as to know where I can smoke and where i cant, I really don't want to break any rules / do something to bother anyone.

thanks a lot

Smoking 2009/9/8 08:05
As a smoker in Australia, we are practically treated like lepers. In Japan, ciggies are cheap and there are lots of smokers.

There are some areas that are non smoking, and signs are usually obvious. If they are not, don't risk it, there are smoking police! There are lots of smoking areas and smoking rooms, you will come across them so just smoke when you do. Much more opportunity to smoke in Tokyo and over Japan than I thought.

new fines 2009/9/8 09:20
Stick to the smoking areas. The part of Tokyo I work in recently introduced a spot fine of 2,000 yen for anyone caught smoking on the streets around the station- I saw one or two very nervous-looking smokers hiding their cigarettes inside their hands on the main road this morning!
