Foreigner-friendly bars in Golden Gai? 2009/12/11 06:59
Simple: how do I tell that a bar is foreigner-friendly? Highly doubt that they'd have signs saying this. If I walk and and they don't want us there, will they make me just extremely uncomfortable? (I'd like to avoid this). Will they just refuse to serve me?

On the other hand, what are some good bars to check out there?

Finally, will I look like a complete tool if I whip otu a phrasebook?

There's nothing special about Golden Gai, just small, old hole-in-the wall bars. Some only welcome their regulars, foreign or Japanese. Others will serve you if your Japanese is good enough but will charge you an arm and a leg for 1 beer. I think I was charged 4,000 yen for a reg. bottle of Kirin, the one time that I went.
