Does it snow in Osaka? 2010/1/9 18:56
Hi Uji...planning another visit to Japan again. This time is Osaka. Would like to catch some snow around Osaka, could you recommend a nice onsen resort near to Osaka (probably 2 nights stay over at a ryokan).

Only very rarely does it snow in Osaka itself.

Kinosaki Onsen often has a little bit of snow in mid winter, but it is not always guaranteed:

Snow is almost guaranteed in the Okuhida region, but it is quite a long journey from Osaka:

Gero Onsen, along the way to Okuhida, also usually gets some snow in winter:

Even if it snowed in Osaka, it wouldn't stay on the ground. It'd just melt.

I saw snow in Nara and Kyoto... Even then, the snow was gone by midday. If you really want to see it, you'll need to go wherever you want to go early. At least, that's how Kansai's weather was last year...

Big cities like Osaka and Tokyo are always generally poor places to try and see snow. Snow is best enjoyed in rural areas.

Thanks for all the replies. I have few queries on Osaka:
1. How far away is Kansai Airport to the city?
2. Which hotel in the city would be recommended with easy access to the train station? (other than Hotel Granvia Osaka)

I assume you refer to JR Osaka Station since you mention the Granvia. I recommend the Hilton Osaka and the Ritz-Carlton.

Depends on the train station TO WHERE

ShinOsaka station to Tokyo, Nagoya, Himeji, Hiroshima etc.
Osaka Station to Kyoto, Kobe, Wakayama, Nara etc.
Namba Station to Nara, Kobe etc.

I recommend a hotel near a busy station on Midosuji Subway(Red) line, if you use it as a base for downtown Osaka, daytrips and access from the airport.

Hi Uji, I would like to head to Takayama direct from Kansai Airport upon arrival (8pm) - would this be a good suggestion? Will stay for 2 nights before I head on to Osaka.

Hi Uji....is it convenient to travel around with luggages. I read about Takuhaibin Services but not sure if it works with my itinerary:
11 Feb - CentraAir (Nagoya airport) to Nagoya (intend to take a bus. Does the bus allow luggages?) From Nagoya, will take a train to Takayama (any problem with luggages on the train?)
13 Feb - Takayama - Nagoya - Osaka Universal City (via train)
15 Feb - Osaka Universal City to Osaka (via train)

Could you also advise the best mode of transport between these cities/towns:
Nagoya airport --)Nagoya--)Takayama--)Nagoya--)Osaka Universal City--)Osaka
Thanks..

I recommend:
Nagoya Airport - (Meitetsu train) - Nagoya - (JR Hida limited express) - Takayama - (JR Hida limited express) - Nagoya - (JR Tokaido Shinkansen) - Osaka

Universal City is located in central Osaka, easily accessible by JR train. Details depend on where in Osaka you travel from.

Thanks Uji...do I have to make advance reservations?
by oishii rate this post as useful

... 2010/2/6 11:20
No, reservations are not mandatory on any of these trains. But on some they are possible and recommended for your peace of mind. Making them upon arrival is early enough (and probably the only option anyway).
