Texting Japanese Cellphones 2010/8/11 05:56
I have a friend who is in Japan and we want to exchange SMS, however I am not sure how to go about this.
I am in the UK and the receiver is living in Japan with a Japanese cellphone (obviously)
Can I send an SMS from my phone to the receivers phone?

I'm in Europe and I have no problems at all sending SMS to my Japanese friend.
If you have a pre-paid card in your phone, you should check first if it's possible sending SMS to a foreign country though.

Of course in Japan people are used to sending e-mail on their phones instead. My friend had to figure out some stuff, but he's also perfectly able to send SMS to me with his Japanese phone.

This info is for Softbank but it costs 100 yen per message for your friend to send international sms.

The instructions are here:

http://mb.softbank.jp/en/global_services/message/

Japan's country code is 81 so if your friend's number is 080-xxxx-xxxx then enter +81-80-xxxx-xxxx.
