I have a friend who is in Japan and we want to exchange SMS, however I am not sure how to go about this. I am in the UK and the receiver is living in Japan with a Japanese cellphone (obviously) Can I send an SMS from my phone to the receivers phone?

I'm in Europe and I have no problems at all sending SMS to my Japanese friend. If you have a pre-paid card in your phone, you should check first if it's possible sending SMS to a foreign country though.
Of course in Japan people are used to sending e-mail on their phones instead. My friend had to figure out some stuff, but he's also perfectly able to send SMS to me with his Japanese phone.
