Coconuts? 2012/2/15 00:03
In my home country they sell coconut meat (the white stuff inside) with lime and chili powder. It is very popular.
I am moving to Nagasaki and I want to know if they sell it there or anywhere in Japan.

Thanks :D

You will not find it anywhere in Tokyo or Japan-including Chinatown, Tokyo.
I have yet to see coconut milk extract or grated coconut in frozen, dehydrated or canned at Motomachi chukagai.

Do you mean fresh coconut with chilli and lime added? Or is it dessicated (dried) with those ingredients added and pre-packed?

It is easy to find fresh lemon and chilli, but as I am not keen on coconut I can't remember if I've ever seen whole fresh ones in any supermarkets or specialist shops. I have however bought coconut milk (canned) and coconut cream (in a packet) these were both from "foreign food" shops in Tokyo. The milk I have also seen in a few regular supermarkets.

You may be able to buy dessicated coconut in the "baking" section of supermarkets, along with cake decorations, chocolate chips etc.

Thank you for the reply.
I mean the fresh ones. The ones where you chop the coconut in half and scrape the meat inside.

During summer, sometimes greengroceries in Ameyoko, Ueno are selling fresh coconuts.
I'm not sure if they are selling at this time of year...

Green, young coconuts are not found anywhere in Tokyo.

In Ameoyoko, there is the old brown coconuts and whole durians, lychees in season but not young coconuts.

The only option available is the young coconut extract (scrapped meat)/milk drink in cans.

Amazingly, whole young coconuts are only found in L.A. and S.F and Oakland Chinatowns from Mexico. Sometimes in Toronto Spadina and Scarborough, never in Dubai or Auckland,NZ and certainly not Motomachi chukagia, Japan.
