Staying in Shinjuku- Pubs and Izakayas? 2012/3/23 01:39
Hello all, I'm probably staying in Shinjuku, and am looking for suggestions on nightlife. As Soapland stuff and thumpa-thumpa clubs are not really my thing, I wonder what other nifty alternatives there are. Definitely checking out the Golden Gai, but also interested in other things besides bars. Many thanks for all the help on my other posts!

Omoide Yokocho, for sure. Mmm yakitori bars.

(sorry, you'll need to use a translator on that one, but it's a very handy map)

Map of Golden Gai too http://www.goldengai.net/shop/
Our favourite there is Bar Albatross. The cover charge isn't horrific, they're happy to have gaijin there, and the atmosphere is lovely.

Samurai (http://whereintokyo.com/venues/25049.html ) is an interesting little jazz cafe where they play vinyl jazz records and hold occasional haiku-related events.

New Dug (http://bento.com/rev/0523.html ) is another jazz cafe, a little more crowded and somewhat smokier.

Pit Inn (http://www.pit-inn.com/ ), a little farther east, has live jazz every night.
