What is the best method to learn Katakana? 2012/12/5 03:07
I am still learning Hiragana but wanted to know the methods you used.

There are textbooks that will teach different methods. Some use picture association - I still remember the Hiragana "Ka" as a car going off a cliff!

Depending on how you learn many people now also seem to learn by using flash cards either on their computer or a tablet/phone, possibly with something like Anki.

Good luck!

What I did was that I tried to memorize the list (ie アイウエオ、カキクケコ、サシスセソ...) and write down all of them whenever I had a piece of paper and a pen in front of me, and later check the ones I didn't remember. Just repeat this and eventually you will learn them.

For me, flash cards are not a good way to learn. I learn much more quickly if I really write them down.

Textbooks are a waste. If you have trouble remembering the kana then Anki is a good and popular flashcard program to help remember them. Anki is good for learning Japanese in general.

Try with simple and basic words.
Reading Japanese newspaper for kids is nota bad idea to improve your katakana, for more detail check below link.

I used the app Human Japanese (available for Android, iOS, and Windows computers) to build most of my Japanese foundation. It includes the full tour of katakana, including proper stroke order and hints on how to make your writing nice & tidy. No affiliation :)

For actual writing with a pen, I reverted to a workbook called "Easy Kana" by Rita L Lampkin and Osamu Hoshino:
http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Kana-Workbook-Practice-Hiragana/dp/08442853...

But I'm sure there are loads and loads of other workbooks. For me personally, workbooks were a great help, because they include templates that you can trace and then do them yourself. The aforementioned workbook even goes as far as having you practice vertical writing.

Another good way is to find a Japanese beginner's course (IRL that is) that includes Katakana. That way you'll be tutored by a person who knows how to teach. A bit more expensive tho.

Sorry for bumping an old thread but I thought some people might find this useful.

I've learned both hiragana and katakana in 1 day using a program called "Kanamemo", it's by far the best tool I've ever seen for this.

The download link on the official site seems to be outdated but I found 2 other:

Official: http://blog.aegisub.org/2008/07/kanamemo-tool-for-apprentice-weeaboo.h...

Download:

Couldn't test them because I am on a Mac right now but I am pretty sure they are both good, it's a really small but powerful program.
