Japanese last name 2012/12/12 06:05
me and my friend wanted to "create" a japanese last name with a special meaning. now my actual question is: how can i put one of these words:
pure, naive, kind-hearted (or something like that)
and something animal-related (no specific animals, just animals in general) like ears, tail or paws together to create a japanese last name with a proper meaning?

O.K., last is for family, first is for person. (It's note for me)

How about H(habu/hanyu; grow wings)?
A great shogi master has this name. His name is called "Habu" not "Hanyu".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoshiharu_Habu

For reference,
(ki/nama/u; pure/naive) is often used such as (asou; hemp yielder), (ikushima; islander) and so on.
e(shin/chika; kind/friendly) is often used for first name.
(o; tail) is often used such as (nagao; long-tail), (ozaki; cape/peak like tail) and so on.

Now it's vague.
Because Japanese name is very diverse.
Can you choose some Kanji or meaning?
Then I can suggest some names using those.

thank you for your answer, that's really helpful
i'm really sorry but i can't really choose a specific kanji because my japanese is really poor :( but i really liked the suggestions with the tail! ((nagao; long-tail), (ozaki; cape/peak like tail)

is it possible that you can list me more names like this? i would really, really appreciate it! i'm particularly just searching for a last name with a nice meaning, somehow related to what i mentioned in my first post! sorry again that i can't help out with giving specific kanji :(

Re: Japanese last name 2012/12/13 17:17
I think maybe e(toji/usami; rabbit ear) is unreal name, but it's allowed especially as pen-name, charactor's name.
Now I googled and they say there is a name eR(tomiyama; rabbit ear mountain).

About (o; tail),
(seo; clean tail), (mio; beautiful tail), (shirao; white tail), (tuzurao; nine tails)

Very famous double-meaning family names,
r(icho [means "ginkgo"]; duck foot)
V(takanashi [means "no hawk"]; little birds play)
- Kanji means "little birds play" and pronunciation means "no hawk".

In short, you can make Japanese name with considerably perfect freedom as your pleases.
So I'll try to think good names and make list up here.
And please try to show your image more specific/limited.
Some animals, some parts or your story why you want J-name?

Excuse my poor English.(x_x;

Nutsue,

One thing you might want to keep in mind is that Japanese names, if mentioned only by their sounds (written in Romaji or in Hiragana), do not carry meanings by themselves. So if you are looking for a Japanese name, you will need to have the kanji as well.

I believe the suggestions by ajapaneseboy are great, but if you decide to use one of the names suggested, be sure to copy the kanji version as well :)

@ajapaneseboy
thank you, these names are really great! the reason i ask for japanes names is that i draw in my free time and i created a character many years ago (which grew dear to me), and since i don't have a family name for it yet, i would love to find something that would fit my love for animals (and because of my love for the japanese culture/language, i knew the name should be japanese). i'm sorry that i can't give any more specific informations, but since i loved your suggestions with the word tail in it, and i would love to hear more of those tail-related names! so if you don't mind, please post as many names as you can think of, i would really love to hear them all! :3

oh, and don't worry, your english isn't bad at all! i can understand you perfectly, even if my english isn't the best either.

Re: Japanese last name 2012/12/13 21:17
thank you so much! but now i only have one question left: where do i have to use the ? i mean, you suggested , where the kanji for tail is in the first place, and (for example) , where the kanji for tail is in the last place. so, when is used where? i hope i don't bother you too much with my qestions!

Re: Japanese last name 2012/12/13 22:19
AK's point is very important.
So remember Kanji when you selected.

Of course, questions/ideas are welcome!

(nagao) and (onaga) are good.
(oZaki) is good too, but maybe (Sakio) is very rare.
And in some cases, reading is changed...
(hirao) is common and ordinary name, but (ohira/odaira) is very rare.
(ojiro) is probable/possible firmily name.
But maybe (ose) is unreal, (omi) and (oku) are very rare.

Reading Japanese proper nouns have many exceptions, so it's too difficult to read even for Japanese.(x_x;

۔(maruo; round/spherical tail), `(ogata; shape of tail) or Ք(torao; tiger tail), (ushio; cow tail)
