I have been invited by a Japanese family to their house for dinner. What should I take as a gift. I am from New Zealand

You live in Japan now? Then just get some sweets. It really depends on the household but consumable items are always appreciated. You know, Japanese houses /apartments are not that big, so people got no spaces to keep earth wares or indoor plants and things like that.
If you are coming directly from New Zealand, Ifm sure anything from T-shirts and local products would make great gifts.

Thank you for your suggestion. The evening went well, I gave the family a box of very nice chocolates, which they had with green tea after the meal.
