In addition to the list shown above (there are others across the more than 100 railway companies in Japan), JR have been testing several services including driverless shinkansen as recently as a week ago. The busy Yamanote circle line in central Tokyo has also had a few test runs (without passengers) a couple of years ago, but they are still working on that one. Last I saw they had problems with the train stopping in the correct location, but they (JR) are working on introducing many driverless trains in the future.

There were the famous buses at the Olympics. Maybe someone local can enlighten us what happened to them afterwards.

Driverless tech is very expensive. The upfront research and developement costs outweight current ongoing wages of drivers. So you'll still see drivers for a long time yet.

Well, I don't know about cars, but seeing that we have moved from trains to busses and now to cars, please allow me to move one step further to self driving bicycles, which as a matter of fact here in the Netherlands already exist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSZPNwZex9s
