Sasebo Street Map 2006/6/11 04:51
I noticed your name, John Mohring. We lived in Hachimancho, Hachiman-dani. I think my parents knew your parents.
I, too, would like to find a street map of Sasebo. I plan to visit the city in November.

I lived at the above address in 1955. The owner was Ms. Emiko Yamashita. Does anyone remember her?

street map of sasebo - UJI 2006/6/29 14:59
UJI, Please indicate the location of hachimancho on the Sasebo street map by some means such as its map number designation or the color of its map area. Thank you.

Thank you UJI 2006/7/4 15:44
I see numbers from 1-16 on the map of the Hachimancho area. Did the 15 in my address mean that I lived in that small area rather than being a specific house? The postman had to know everyone living there to deliver mail.

The 15 refers to the sub area. The houses within the subarea are further numbered (not shown on the map).

I used to work at Sasebo city office. If you call and ask for map of Sasebo in English, they'll send it to you, no matter where you live (but I'm not sure if they have street map, though). The number is 0956-24-1111. You don't have to speak Japanese, they always have someone who speaks English. I hope this helps...

thanks again Uji, and others 2006/7/7 12:10
Is there a URL I can access that provides a reasonably discriminating satellite view of the 15 Hachimancho area? I'm curious to see if the neighborhood looks the same as in 1954-55.I'm sure the hill is still there.

Fantastic! 1,000,000 thanks, UJI! 2006/7/8 05:45
Neighborhood looks pretty much the same. Taxis had to stop when the road narrowed near 13 and then I walked up the hill to the small house, third from the end of the lane. You've rolled the years back for me. I appreciate it.

last question 2006/7/9 15:47
In 1954-55, there was a well-known nightclub located on a hillside with a large red neon sign visible from the port. Entrance to this club was supposedly restricted to US officers. Can anyone tell me the name of the club? TIA.

William:
I lived at #12 Hachiman cho in 1954-55. Then moved down the hill about two blocks where we lived until 1957. Our landlord was Shinohara.
